Католические священники / Catholic priests / Preoţii catolici

Recommended Posts

Huge portrait of a catholic priest.

The text reads: + abatele (abbot) Dr. Metodiu Zavoral/ 27.VIII.1929 (I guess it is the hand writing of the abbot himself).

He is not Romanian, I searched the name on the web and it turned out he is Czech.

During WW1 starting with 1914 the Strahov Monastery was transformed in a military hospital. In 1914 some Romanian wounded (serving in the k.u.k. army) arrived there and the abbot started to learn Romanian language in order to speak with the wounded solders.

Mircea, such an interesting story behind that photo! Thank you very much for sharing with us your knowledge! :JC_doubleup:

By the way, there's another private photo of the same priest in my collection and it's exactly the same that the one published in University of Cluj - 1930 periodical!!!

Here it is. It's a postcard-size portrait

Close-up: awards and a pectorale.

What is the neck order, by the way?

The neck order is the french: „Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur” - „Commandeur” grade.
