Recommended Posts

Königlich Württembergisches (Gebirgs) Schneeschuhbataillon?

(Deutschen Alpenkorps).

----------------------------

Hello!

On the advice of Hauptmann d.R. Paulke of the Jg.Btl.8, the first German snow and ski associations were to be established in the Vosges mountains, since the French also had "skiers".

The first order came from bayer. KM, to set up a snowshoe battalion with the strength of staff and four companies with one MG platoon each.

This battalion was intended for the Vosges.

For the East, the Oberkommando East ordered the deployment of the Snowshoe Battalion II, which was also deployed in Munich in strength of staff and six companies (three troops each).

Mobilization of the two battalions.

I.Btl. on January 7th 1915. deployment of the Vosges at the XV.RK (Eberhardt), resp. army deputy Gaede

II.Btl. on 1st January 1915, deployment of staff and 1st-3rd Kp. in Kurland with 1st Kav.Div., later Ldw.Div. Königsberg, and 3rd Kav.Div.

4-6 Kp. Carpathians at Dt. Southern Army. These three companies formed the III. snowshoe battalion from 13.4.1915

Replacement.

I.Btl. from snowshoe department Munich (later Immenstadt)

II.Btl. from Ers.Abt./Jg.Btl.5 Hirschberg

Regiment

21.5.1915 repatriation Btl.I, 22.5.1915 repatriation II.Btl., 24.5.1915 repatriation III.Btl. to the camp Lechfeld, for the installation of the Jg.Rgt.3 (subordination Jg.Brig.2/Alpenkorps)

Formation of the regiment:

I.Btl.: I.Snowshoe Btl. without 4.Kp.

II.btl.: II.snowshoe btl. (1.-3.Kp.)

III.btl.: III.snowshoe btl. (4.-6.Kp, from btl.II)

IV.btl.: 4th/btl.I and the former Ers.Abt., as well as teams from bayer. Landstorm in the Vosges

Combat value enhancement

At the end of September 1915, the MG_Züge, which were subordinated to the companies, were combined into MG-Kp. 1 Kp. per btl.

The regiment was structured as follows:

Staff

I.Btl. (1.-4.Kp., 4.Kp.= MG-Kp.)

II.btl. (5.-8.Kp., 8.Kp.= MG-Kp.)

III.btl. (9.-12.Kp., 12.Kp.= MG-Kp.)

IV.btl. (13.-16.Kp., 16.Kp.= MG-Kp.)

Confusion of names.

In mid-October 1915, the terms "snowshoe battalions" were abolished and in 1918 the 4th, 8th, 12th and 16th Kp were temporarily designated as 1st-4th MG-Kp. But in September 1918 the original designations were taken over again

Due to lack of replacement, the II. Btl. was dissolved on 14 October 1918. The remains were transferred to the III. Btl., the staff was preserved as a reserve.

Replacement from July 1915

As a regiment, the replacement came from:

Btl.I (bayer.): Bavarian.Snowshoe-Ers-Abt. with replacement machine gun kp. in Immenstadt, later renamed to bayer. Mountain-Inf.Ers.Btl.I.AK with Ers.Geb.MG-Kp.

Btl.II (bd.): Building Ers.Abt. of the II.Schneeschuh-Btl./Jg.Rgt.3 with pack animal column in Freiburg i.Br., from 8.12.1917 Brühl

III.Btl.(pr.): Building Ers.Kp./Jg.Btl.5 with pack animals, later building Ers.Abt. Hirschberg, last building Ers.Abt./III.Snowshoe Btl./Hg.Rgt.3 with pack animals in Schmiedeberg (Riesengebirge)

  • 2 weeks later...

A very young boy... But probably a good skier.

Two photos from the same young man. Maybe he was the "Dandy" in his village...
